DIN 2738 ( P20 )  is the preferred steel choice when it comes to manufacturing plastic injection moulds and tools with moderate strength demands. It is also actively relied upon for making die casting molds for Plastic components. The applications involving plastic injection technologies are immense in social economy and the products so derived can be counted not only in homes and offices but also in industrial ambiences. This steel grade allows developing effective plastic injection moulds and offers high level of finish for the end product. Din 2738 is also used for making tools and is a common tool steel. Virat Special Steels is the leading supplier , stockiest and exporter of P20 alloy and offers its products in different shapes, dimensions and forms to suit the moulds making demands of enterprises.

steel type by shape

P20 steel alloy is low in Carbon content and it can vary in the range of 0.3 – 0.4%. However, 2738 is characterized by the presence of Chromium and Nickel elements that generate medium level hardness and this makes it a suitable contender as a tool steel also. Annealing and tempering processes are also performed to ensure desired hardness. Tempering is done at 482 – 593 degree centigrade and it delivers Rockwell C harness in the range 37 – 28. Annealing is performed at 760 – 788 degree centigrade followed by furnace cooling.

High surface finish from 2738 moulds

Major use of 2738 ( P20 )  is for making molding dies for the manufacture of plastics products. Since P20 is largely depended upon for making dies and moulds, some specific parameters need to be considered as fundamental. These include among other things, the surface finish delivered to the final product and the machinability of P20 itself. Let us first consider the factor of surface finish.

The constituents that go into making of 2738 largely determine as what type and level of surface finish would be obtained. Sulphur in steel alloys tends to generate imperfections in the surface finish because sulphides get eroded when polishing of 2738 is attempted. In P20, S content is kept at 0.03% only. On the other hand, uniform micro-arraying of the constituents of 2738 serves to boost the finishing attributes of the molded product.

Deriving complex dies from Din 2738

Machining of 2738 – P20 steel is quiet easy as compared to other alloy grades of steel. This allows making complex dies and casting moulds that directly determines the feasibility of innovations at the creators’ desks in varied manufacturing orientations. Welding of P20 can be also carried out & this further contributes to making intricate moulds and dies. Virat Special Steels offers 2738 products of diversity and these can be customized to suit the casting demands of enterprises.
